How I Discovered the Right Direction To Success

My journey started when I was in college in 2009. I was studying at DU as a Physics Honors graduate. In the 2nd year, I was introduced to network marketing through my brother, Rahul Bhatnagar.

It became a huge turning point for me because during the first year I was enjoying the big-city life as all of it was very fancy to me.

I had come from a small town, Dehradun. I was having a ball of a time there roaming around the new places, having fun with friends and all that.

But when in the second year, when I was introduced to a big internet dream, when I got to know that something big can be achieved with the help of the internet, my perspective changed.

I belong to a very humble family, so I didn’t have much access to the internet.

My father had his job that dealt in computers and laptops only, so sometimes he used to bring a laptop home, and that day I used to go crazy because those were the specific days when I got to play video games.

Moreover, the laptop was something that was not so easily accessible to me. So longing for that fueled up the craze more.

So, when in my 2nd year when I got to know that there’s so much that can be done with the help of the internet because our product in network marketing was about website hosting.

And the business model of network marketing is in which we had to make a chain and give business presentations about our product, so it led me to gain more knowledge about my product.

From there, I went on to learn how to make a website on WordPress.

By then it was already 2010. Because of that, I got to learn about the biggest internet business models which I was unaware of previously. This is how my journey began.

Our network marketing team had more than 300 people in it.

I don’t remember the exact figure now. We also became a part of one more network marketing team that was also huge.

All that gave me immense confidence to speak in front of people because I had to do a lot of business presentations.

One of the traits that are inbuilt in me is that whenever I put my hands on something, I completely devote myself to that work.

I have had days when I had delivered 10 presentations in just 1 day. Our target was to do 2 presentations every day at the minimum.

For that to do each day we had to search for new people, basically, strangers, to whom we had to give presentations.

Wherever we saw any person we started a bit of conversation to break the ice and got started with our presentation.

But, our network marketing company faced the downfall like most of the companies do, and it did not become a success especially on a monetary basis, so we had to leave it in the 3rd year.

After I completed my graduation, I started my own venture named “Uprist Service Portal Private Limited” (USP). In that, I used to sell coupons.

We were a team of 7 people including Rahul and 5 other people. We used to sell coupons in the events, standing outside the college, standing on a busy street under a canopy, going inside any jam-packed restaurant.

Basically, wherever we could find any person, we used to sell them.

But again it didn’t turn out to be a very profitable venture.

We kept doing it for 4 years. In the span of time, we added events to it, we successfully added a lot of people with us.

We acquired more than 50,000 customer base. Initially, we used to sell but later on, we started giving it away for free. So the majority of our customers were with us because we offered them free coupons.

We did not have much guidance about doing a sustainable business.

We thought that once we will be able to gain customers it will be a piece of cake for us to monetize them. We didn’t know how to plan businesses.

We did not know how to use the internet to earn money. We were way too far from realizing our goal, so it didn’t work, and our earning was only Rs 500/- per month for up to 4 years.

Already we were earning next to nothing and above that, we suffered a loss of Rs 10 lakhs in an event. So that was the time when the water went over the head, and we finally decided to switch.

The good part of that time was by that time, I had learned a lot of things on the internet in terms of promoting the USP, the business of coupons.

I watched a lot of videos. I remember I heavily consumed Gary Vaynerchuk’s videos when he used to do the presentations where he used to say that Facebook ads can turn your business upside down.

The time we are talking about is 2012. He used to do those keynotes around 2012–2013. I used to practice whatever he taught during the night and the daytime until 10–11 PM, was dedicated to our USP business.

I practiced Facebook ads after coming back home. That was the starting of my real learning into the internet marketing industry.

I did not start learning Facebook ads not because I wanted to get known for it, but I learned because I wanted to implement it in my USP business. So it was more of a necessity.

When the time came to switch my business, I had acquired a decent knowledge of it and had also gained the confidence to offer it as a service to other people.

So in 2014 or 2015, I closed a deal with a client for free. Actually, that client was someone with whom we had a contract of coupons going on already.

So he asked us to include both the service and the coupons, I will pay for both of it. It was a beginning for us in the city and the client also held an authoritative position in the city.

So we agreed to move ahead on the client’s terms. You can say, it was kind of both, Free and paid.

But the amount that we used to charge for coupons was the same as we charged for both things combined with this client, so ultimately we provided the service for Free.

But again, those were the starting days in which gaining experience and gaining confidence were more important than making money.

So I did it for free. And from there we moved on to the Internet marketing journey. I made my first internet-based investment in 2015 of about $500 which I spent on a membership platform.

A membership platform is a platform where you can host your courses and sell them to other people.

We did not have a lot of money then. So I and my friend Gaurav Madaan together made that investment.

He took aside some money from his job’s salary and I took some advance from my client with whom I was working at that time and arranged the rest of the money from some other resources. It is after I had made a loss of Rs 10 lakh in my USP business.

So we were already in debt of 10 lakhs and also made a big investment on top of it.

Currently, I have recently launched the Beta version of my product FlexiFunnels which is India’s first-ever Funnel builder.

I am the founder of “Saurabh Bhatnagar University” and we make premium Internet marketing content available to the masses.

We have already managed to gather 300,000+ students in our university already. Before that, I have done a few software launches in the International market.
